Is it up to date?

TL;DR

If your social profiles still say what you did two years ago, you’re probably missing out on new clients.

I’ve helped business owners fix this fast. In this article, I show you how to update your profiles so they reflect what you offer now and make it easier for people to connect with you. You’ll get a checklist, a smart way to use AI, and a few examples that can save you time. This is one of the simplest ways to boost your visibility without creating anything new.

You already know the importance of attracting clients, right?

But here’s a question:

When was the last time you updated your social media profiles?

If you can’t remember or it’s been a while, you’re missing an easy win for improving your visibility and attracting more clients.

It’s easy to set it and forget it. Believe me, I’m guilty of doing that.

Then, one day, I take a minute to see what it says and realize it’s out of date, could tell a better story, isn’t focused on the clients I want to attract, or the links need to be updated…

Your business evolves. You evolve.

You get the picture.

So, while this isn’t a ninja visibility hack, it’s a reminder:

Take a few minutes one day this week to look at all your social media profiles. Make tweaks and updates to reflect best who you are, what you do, and who you serve now.

When someone hears about you for the first time, they often head straight to your social media profiles. Whether it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Substack, TikTok, or another platform, this is your chance to make a great first impression.

A stale or outdated profile can be a turn-off for potential clients.

Conversely, a well-crafted, current profile shows professionalism, expertise, and confidence.

You want potential clients to see exactly what you offer, how you can help them, and why they should stick around. An outdated profile can confuse or turn people away, while a current, relevant one gives people a reason to click “follow” or “connect.”

Take Action: Update Your Social Media Profiles

Updating your profiles can seem like a chore, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. For each social platform you and your ideal clients spends time, review the following and make changes as necessary;

Profile Picture: Use a recent, high-quality photo that reflects your personality or brand. People connect with faces, not logos (unless you’re a bigger brand).

Bio or Headline: Make this short but punchy. Clearly state what you do and who you help. Be specific! For example, “I help solopreneurs increase online visibility with actionable AI strategies” sounds much more appealing than “Marketing Expert.”

Links: Make sure your website, lead magnets, or any other call-to-action links are working and visible. Don’t let clients get lost in the internet maze trying to find you.

About Section: Refresh this section to include the latest results you’ve achieved for clients, any new services you offer, or any qualifications you’ve gained. Be authentic and focus on how you solve your clients’ problems.

Pin Important Posts: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X) let you pin a post to the top of your profile. Use this space to highlight your latest offer, free guide, or upcoming event to drive more visibility to your core content.

Cover image: Update the “hero” or cover image to reflect your current brand or offers.

Experiment with AI to Help You Craft Better Profiles

You don’t have to do all the work yourself. Let AI help you craft the perfect bio or update the wording on your profile. Here’s a prompt you can use to make it easier:

AI Prompt: Write a concise, professional bio that showcases my expertise in [your field], highlights the specific value I offer to [your target audience], and ends with a clear call to action. Keep the tone engaging but straightforward.

This AI prompt can help you brainstorm ideas or tweak the wording to sound more polished and aligned with your brand voice. You can also adjust it for your different profiles.

Another option is to include the URL for your website’s About Page and have your AI tool draft multiple bios for you to review.

Tip » I suggest creating a document you keep on file with multiple versions of your bio in various word counts, which you can easily copy and paste on your social media accounts.

You can use them when invited to be a podcast guest or guest blogger.

I have had a running list of bio versions for years. As my business evolves, I update both long—and short-form bios to have on hand when I need them.

What Else Should You Know?

When updating your profiles, remember to stay consistent across platforms. You want clients to recognize your brand no matter where they find you.

Also, make a habit of checking in on your profiles every couple of months. It’s not a one-and-done task. Your business evolves, and so should your profiles.

And don’t forget: engaging regularly on your updated profiles is just as important as keeping them up to date. Post updates, share client successes, and interact with your audience. This keeps your profile active and boosts your chances of showing up in searches.

A simple update to your social media profiles can be a positive shift for attracting more clients. It’s easy to overlook, but once you make those updates, you’ll see how a little effort here can go a long way in improving your online visibility.

Your turn: What’s the one thing you will update on your profile today? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear what changes you’re making. Also, post a link to your profile on the social network of your choice so I can learn about what you’re up to!

How increasing your online presence drives business growth

TL;DR

You don’t need to be everywhere online, but you do need to be visible where it counts. I’ve seen too many solo business owners pour time into content that goes nowhere because they’re missing the visibility piece.

This article explains why consistently showing up in the right places matters more than doing everything, and how to focus your efforts so clients can find you. I share how I learned this the hard way, and how I now teach a simple strategy that works. If you’re ready to stop creating in a vacuum and start attracting clients, this is for you.

If you’re running a solo business, you’re probably wearing all the hats, delivering your service or product, handling marketing, chasing new clients, and trying to grow. I feel that. I’ve been there for over 20 years.

With everything pulling at your attention, one thing stands out: visibility is a must. You can have the best service or product in the world, but you’ll be stuck in the shadows if no one knows about it.

Why Online Visibility is the Lifeblood of Your Business

It doesn’t matter how awesome your service is if nobody can find you. That’s why visibility is the first step to getting in front of the right people. Potential clients need to see you, hear about you, or stumble across your content before deciding to work with you.

Being online isn’t just helpful; it’s necessary for your business to survive. Over 80% of consumers look up products or services online before buying (and I’d guess you’ve probably done the same!).

If your business isn’t showing up in search results or on social media, you might as well be invisible.

Showing up where people are searching—whether that’s Google, social platforms, or even online directories—is key. Without it, you’re missing out on those golden moments when potential clients are ready to discover what you offer.

Visibility: A Strategic Move for Getting Clients

Now, just being online isn’t enough. You’ve got to show up in the places where your ideal clients are hanging out. Are they browsing Instagram? Scrolling LinkedIn? Googling for solutions? Your job is to be there, front and center.

Research shows businesses engaging with their audience see up to 13x more ROI. That’s a big deal. When you match your visibility with where your audience is, you’re setting yourself up to be in the right spot at the right time—right when they’re ready to take action.

Visibility as Your Competitive Edge

Let’s face it: there’s no shortage of competition. But you stand out when you’re consistently visible across the places your audience spends time. It’s about being top-of-mind when your potential clients are ready to decide.

Here’s something to think about: nearly 92% of all web traffic goes to websites on the first page of Google. If your competitors are there and you’re not, guess who’s winning that client? That’s why investing in SEO, content marketing, and even partnerships can help you grab that edge.

Visibility is a Long Game

Visibility isn’t a one-and-done deal. It takes consistent effort.

Things change—algorithms get updated, trends shift, and new platforms pop up. You’ve got to keep up and keep showing up.

In fact, businesses that regularly update their content see 67% more traffic than those that don’t. So, whether it’s tweaking your SEO, staying active on social, or trying out new content types, you’ve got to be in it for the long haul.

AI Can Help Boost Your Visibility

AI is making it easier for solo business owners like us to maintain visibility. Whether it’s helping with content creation, SEO optimization, or automating social posts, AI can do a lot of the heavy lifting. It frees you up to focus on other areas of your business without sacrificing your online presence.

I know some of this might feel overwhelming, but trust me, AI tools can make it manageable. They help streamline the process, so you’re not constantly stressing about visibility. And plenty of marketers are already using it to their advantage.

Now, I’m all about keeping things simple. So, let’s break this down into smaller, doable steps.

The Big Picture to Get More Clients

From here on out, I’ll focus on micro-actions you can consistently take to maintain your presence based on the big-picture goals and strategies you want to pursue.

I’ll address each of the big steps listed below – plus many more – with bite-size steps so you don’t get overwhelmed. 😎

Think of this list as the overarching guide I’ll be following. Each of these 5 points has hundreds of tiny steps that, when implemented, can make a big difference in the long run.

Optimize Your Website: Make sure it’s mobile-friendly, loads quickly, and is optimized for search engines. Add the right keywords, and make it easy for visitors to stick around.

Be Consistent on Social Media: Show up where your audience is. Post engaging content and use AI tools to help schedule posts and track what’s working.

Focus on SEO: Keep your website fresh with relevant content and search-friendly terms, so you show up when people search.

Collaborate to Expand Your Reach: Guest blog, join webinars, or team up with other businesses. It’s a great way to reach new audiences.

Use AI Tools: Automate things like content creation, social media, and even lead generation. Tools like ChatGPT can help lighten the load.

Visibility isn’t a one-time effort; it’s a long-term strategy. The more visible you are, the more clients will find you, and the stronger your business will grow.

Now, here’s the part where you can breathe a little easier. I don’t expect you to be everywhere all the time. Back in the day, I might have said that.

However, with so many platforms available now, I’ve changed my mind. What matters most is that you’re intentional and consistent in the places where your ideal clients spend their time.

So, take it step by step. Keep showing up, keep building your presence, and you’ll see the results in your client base, your growth, and your bottom line.

In the meantime, here’s a question to ponder:

“Who are the clients/customers I want to attract?” (hint: be super specific!)

Is blogging headed for intensive care?

Even worse, do we invoke the R-word?

Is blogging still relevant in a social marketplace of increasingly image-centric, highly mobile consumers, constantly juggling different tools and platforms and, perhaps most importantly, very short on time?

When social media turned the tables on traditional media, leveraging low-cost blog frameworks to create alternative news vehicles, many proclaimed the press release dead.

The press release is still alive and well, though most companies now realize news announcements aren’t going to generate instant headlines or immediate media response.

Truth be told, they never really did. Press releases remain an important vehicle for freely and fairly delivering (read: no exclusives or insider advantage) official company news content, now with a potent SEO kick.

Though the frequency and focus of blog posts may be adjusted and tweaked to accommodate evolving business objectives and consumer preferences, veterans concur that blogging is still a vital marketing strategy that can be integrated with other social media networks.

It’s not an either-or business decision.

10 key recommendations and points to consider for your business blogging roadmap

1. Reaffirm the objectives of your business blog

It’s a marketing tool and an SEO magnet. But how do you want your blog to contribute to your marketing plan?

Is it driving traffic?

Is it driving conversions?

Is it helping brand awareness?

It could very easily be all of the above.

Too many businesses have blogs simply because their competitors do or because they heard they should. This results in stale blogs with no brand identity or voice.

Understanding your why’s will motivate your team and help you adjust your blogging strategy to what is important to your bottom line.

There’s no reason why you can’t integrate your content with major social networks, resulting in highly fluid digital partnerships.

2. Get feedback

Query business colleagues and fellow professionals. You will be surprised by the input and generosity.

The “pay it forward” philosophy has knocked down many traditional competitive barriers. Blogger forums are perfect for getting professional feedback and ideas.

Tap the knowledge base in LinkedIn business groups. When it comes to social media business tools and strategies, there aren’t many secrets.

But also ask your customers! What will they find helpful on your blog? Customer-centric blogging is the way to go. This is what Google has been telling us for years!

Keep an eye on your branded search too! Use your blog to rank for brand-driven queries and control that sentiment better!

3. Get help

If you don’t have time, hire a content consultant or a designer/coder to help with the writing, editing, site add-ons, or a complete makeover. Even teen entrepreneurs offer amazingly cost-effective, high-quality, off-the-shelf solutions and services.

You don’t have to hire a team of CSS/PHP programmers. Low-cost expertise nowadays is in your time zone.

Plus, the future may be pointing to frictionless blog frameworks requiring no coding.

4. Your blog is what you own

Blogs are highly portable and customizable. Your blog is also your asset that will not be taken away from you regardless of changing social media posting rules or the political climate.

Making your blog the center of your content and social media marketing means solidifying your online presence.

If you are considering closing down your business blog and moving to Facebook, get a second opinion.

5. Focus your content better

Take a lesson from Journalism 101, where students are taught that the history of World War II can be written in three sentences. The digital attention span is measured with micrometers. Keeping your articles shorter may be your blogging sweet spot.

Bloggers who are cutting back on output volume are suggesting focused content and niche audiences, i.e. market segmentation.

Make your articles focused, intent-driven, and helpful. No fluff.

It will also help you make business blogging more doable and budget-friendly.

Organizing your upcoming topics also helps maintain an active and effective blog. Try building your calendar around upcoming holidays and observations:

6. It is – and will be – all about quality and authenticity

Blogs generate leads and increase company exposure, especially for smaller businesses looking to expand market awareness.

No matter how you slice it, quality content and a site demonstrating your company is a serious player trumps cold calling any day of the week.

7. Authenticity never fails

Quality is very subjective. You can create rubrics for your writers to follow, have high writing quality standards, and pay a lot of money for each article.

But it may still be not enough.

What many people don’t realize is that what works is authenticity.

Whether it is being authentic in your effort to be helpful or showing the true culture of your company – people love and follow authentic brands. In the AI world, where we often deal and communicate with machines, real human touch will win every time.

Whatever you do, be genuinely serious about being useful and helpful. You cannot fake authenticity.

8. More control

When all is said and done, a blog reflects your company’s brand. You control the text, the images, the audio, and the video.

You can blog 140 characters or 1,400 words. You don’t have to be like everybody else or match your blueprint to the status quo. Your blog is your digital business card that you fully control, unlike any other marketing channel.

9. Make it your community-building tool

Your company blog can be a vehicle for nurturing loyal communities who opt-in to email lists and special content offerings.

It’s a means of developing more personalized relationships with customers and followers via content that may not fit the framework of Facebook or X.

Spotlight your customers, share company news, and reward your most loyal brand ambassadors. You make your own rules here.

10. Blogging rules were meant to be broken

Has blogging lost its luster? In some way, yes. However, digital marketing has changed a lot throughout its short history. It’s more about changing the ways you do things than quitting.

Are you still blogging?

Social media has disrupted the privacy concept – most likely – forever.

If there is a flip side to privacy, it’s security.

Even the casual participant in social streams has probably experienced Twitter or Instagram accounts that have been hacked, which often then send Direct Message (DM) spam with colorful messages or alarming warnings coupled with links that invariably lead to adult content or sites that install malware code on your computer ever-so-quietly in the background.

And attacks don’t have to come from DM spam. Legitimate blogs and websites get hacked, malware code is inserted, and unsuspecting visitors are compromised.

Such cybercrime is more than an annoyance. It can be costly to your business, your clients, or your entire organization, from a few thousand to millions of dollars in lost time, data, and equipment.

Time, money, and reputation are at stake.

The exponential growth of social channels has created a lucrative business for network security solutions providers. But it’s more than about protecting individual devices such as computers, tablets and smartphones. Your social brand is now under constant attack.

While network administrators protect businesses and ISPs from massive attacks via sophisticated technology fortifications, as a social media marketer, it’s largely up to you to protect your social brand or the social accounts you manage for your company or your clients.

The simple question to ask is: can you afford to lose all the work and effort you’ve put into building a prosperous social business channel on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, YouTube, or Pinterest?

If you want to know what will probably happen if your Facebook account is hacked, you should immediately click this link and sober up to the thin social ice on which we all tread. Hari Ravichandran’s book, Intelligent Safety: How to Protect Your Connected Family from Big Cybercrime, tells even more stories like that, so include it on your reading list.

Few of us have the connections to get an audience with a Facebook security specialist. The fact of the matter is that unless Facebook or any social network is financially impacted (read: the board of directors or shareholders punch some buttons), the security and preservation of your social media accounts are totally up to you.

There’s a definite trend here, and it’s probably going to get worse. As you expand your social presence for business applications, hackers will exploit the very qualities that are keys to social business success: your desire for openness, transparency, and accessibility.

When it comes to security, you probably will not be able to turn to your social channel to help unravel an account mess. In other words, you are pretty much on your own.

After personally experiencing a series of attacks from compromised blog sites and social channels, one of which resulted in a total system meltdown requiring a re-install, I created my own short list of protective steps to fight this growing trend:

It’s not enough to have an antivirus program

You have to have a malware protection program as well. And, by the way, Macs are no longer immune. When Macs held a low percentage of market share, cybercriminals needing to infect tens of thousands of computers looked to Windows PCs. Now, there are Macs everywhere, and the hackers know it.

Looking for a free antivirus alternative, try AVG Free. There’s also the free Malwarebytes program, which focuses exclusively on malware rather than viruses.

Not sure which program to use, try free online file-checking utilities such as VirusTotal or VirSCAN, which will test a suspicious file against dozens of the most popular antivirus and anti-malware programs. Gmail is now supplied with free malware scanning tools, so it is a good way to protect yourself from malicious files arriving in an email.

Use two-factor authentication

The latest trend in account protection is two-factor authentication. If you have a Google account, you’ve probably been offered to convert your login security to its 2-step verification process.

Though I agree using two-part authentication can be annoying at times, for the time being, it is considered the best approach for protecting your social accounts from intruders. If a social platform or tool offers it, add the extra layer of protection.

Preview links before clicking them

Link-shortening systems revolutionized social engagement by reducing content curation text clutter in posts and status updates. The problem is any shortened link is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you are going to get. Why take chances?

If you’re just not sure about a shortened link in a Tweet or an email, check it out with any number of handy link-revealing apps such as Unshorten.it. When in doubt, use the tool to load the page before you do!

Take your passwords seriously

Too many people are still not taking their passwords seriously enough. They use the same passwords over and over again. They don’t create secure passwords unless they absolutely have to. They have no password management software, etc. etc.

Let this article be your final incentive: Go ahead and get your passwords in order. Check if your password or email is any kind of hackers’ databases too!

Backup your crown jewels

By now, you should have a backup strategy for your computing devices. Backup to a local server is good, but double up with a backup to the cloud via any number of services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and others. You’re not done yet.

What about your blog, your website, or sites you manage for a company or clients? There are plenty of free and paid backup plugins and solutions for WordPress and other platforms.

Just about any ecommerce builder includes some kind of security and backup options, so make sure you discover and benefit from yours.

As we navigate the complex landscape of social media, it becomes evident that safeguarding our digital identities and brands is a pressing responsibility. While organizations invest heavily in network security solutions to fend off large-scale attacks, individual entrepreneurs and social media marketers are struggling to protect their online presence.

The symbiotic relationship between success in the social realm and qualities like openness, transparency, and accessibility provides an enticing opportunity for hackers to exploit vulnerabilities. Cyberattacks have demonstrated the capacity to compromise even the most prominent platforms, making it clear that no one is immune.

As social media continues to reshape the way we communicate, the responsibility to guard our online presence falls on our shoulders. Keep your online identity secure by managing your passwords safely, using two-factor authentication where possible, and keeping our software updated.

Denise’s Security Recommendations

These are the tools I use to protect my business:

RoboForm – I’ve been using RoboForm as my password manager since it was launched in the early 2000s. Never been hacked like some other password managers on the market. Due diligence is required when choosing a password manager! 😎

BackBlaze – automatic cloud backup for your computer

Google Authenticator – for 2-Factor Authentication on my smartphone (works with iOS and Android)

I believe many entrepreneurs are dealing with high amounts of stress. The same character traits that make you a successful entrepreneur and enable you to go the extra mile when needed are what put you at risk for burnout. Because naturally, you would choose to push through rather than slow down and pace yourself.

Aside from the state of the world, we often have a clear vision and ambition of how we want things to go and what we want to achieve or contribute. Couple that with a high sense of responsibility, a liking to be in control, and perhaps a perfectionistic tendency—and you can see how that’s a volatile combination that doesn’t promote relaxation.

You might be the rare exception, but even if you are, chances are you learned how to deal with stress the hard way. Most of us didn’t grow up learning how to take good care of ourselves…

It’s been said that 90% of diseases are caused by stress. According to McKinsey Health Institute, globally, one in four employees is experiencing signs of burnout. Stress hormones weaken the immune system, increase aging, and the risk of (chronic) disease.

Here are some common signs of stress:

Physical signs:

You often get a cold or headache

Trouble sleeping

Fatigue

Chances are your breathing is relatively shallow and high up in your chest rather than deep in your belly.

Emotional signs:

Feeling overwhelmed

Irritable or moody

Mood swings (e.g., crying, bursts of anger).

Mental signs:

Difficulty concentrating

Worrying

Your thoughts are going a mile a minute.

Most likely, you’re not as productive or creative as you normally are. And you might find it difficult to relax.

Using alcohol, food, shopping, gaming, or social media to unwind and destress (or distract yourself) is another indicator that your stress level is out of control. These are all red flags.

Please note this list is not conclusive. You might experience other signs of stress. Trust your body and what it tries to tell you. If you stop to listen, you’ll know when you’re putting a strain on yourself.

The problem with stress is that when you’re functioning on adrenaline, it seems you’re doing fine. Your body does its utmost to keep you functioning—as it believes you’re in danger—and it will provide you with (false) energy to get you through the day.

If you’re stressed, you need to do something not just to relax but to get rid of the stress hormones you’ve built up in your body. You need to tell your body that you are safe.

Things you can do to combat stress:

Ground yourself. Doing so helps you become aware of your body and what it’s trying to tell you. Many of us spend most of our day in meetings, behind computers, or on the phone. As a result, most of our energy and focus is centered in our head. There’s a reason we find it hard to shut down our thoughts.

Grounding helps you spread that energy and focus evenly throughout your body. You can listen to this complimentary 3-minute audio recording to ground yourself right now.

When you’re grounded, you’ll be able to pick up on the signs your body is giving you, so you can take better care of yourself and steer clear of stress in an early stage.

Take three deep breaths into your belly. Doing so signals to your nervous system that all is well and it helps your body relax. It helps you shift from fight-or-flight mode into relaxation.

This only works if you shift your breathing from your chest to your belly. It’s probably easier to do when you’re already grounded. Placing a hand on your lower belly helps deepen your breathing.

Give yourself a proper lunch break. I know your to-do list is probably endless, and it might feel counterintuitive to take time out for a proper lunch, but I assure you it’s time that will win itself back.

Taking even a short twenty-minute break helps increase your concentration and your energy level. It also has a positive effect on your productivity and creativity. Several years ago, I remember reading about research that concluded that people who took a forty-five-minute lunch break were more productive than those who continued working and ate behind their desks.

While you think you are saving time by not having a lunch break, you are slowing down your productivity so much that your friend who went for lunch and perhaps a quick walk will still get more done during that day.

Do something just for fun. If you like massages, schedule a time for that. If you enjoy singing, dancing, painting, or any other creative endeavor, give yourself permission to do that. If you long to spend (more) time with family or friends, make that a priority. All these things—relaxation, creativity, connection—will help you wind down and release the stress hormones you’ve been building up.

Immerse yourself in nature, especially around trees. Forest bathing was studied in Japan, and being around trees showed many positive effects on health. To be clear: this means no running or workouts. Just quiet contemplation around trees. The oils trees emit support our immune system, lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones. It lowers depression and increases your energy.

I realize doing these things takes time. Time you probably think you don’t have. Think is the operative word here.

The belief that you need to work harder to get better results is simply not true.

When you’re stressed and working long hours, you’re less effective and efficient. Your productivity and creativity go down the drain. Something as simple as a nap increases your ability to solve problems and come up with a solution.

Many cases show a shorter workweek leads to an increase in productivity, quality, revenue, health & well-being, and (job) satisfaction.

If you’re a solo entrepreneur, you might need to outsource certain activities or become more realistic about the amount of work you can do without impeding your health.

If you have the staff, this is your cue to start delegating more and checking in with your employees. Chances are you need to support them in managing their stress and workload, too.

Either way, this is the moment to take action and ensure the new year will be happier, healthier, more successful, and less stressed. 😊

What will you do today to take better care of yourself?
