Maybe you’ve seen it or even downloaded it…a free guide with 18 tips on how to attract more clients.

The guide was created with the help of members of the Marketing Trailblazers Community to celebrate the community’s third anniversary. I wanted to feature members of the community and give away something of value that may entice people to join.

The jargon to describe the document is “user generated lead magnet.” That’s a mouthful!

I’m frequently asked how I do the stuff I do so here’s where I answer that question…

Several people who have downloaded the 18 Tips guide have asked what tools I used to design it.

Let me get this out of the way first…I am graphically challenged!

And, I put together the guide all by myself. I didn’t hire a graphic designer.

As mentioned in the introduction of the guide, all the photos are from my adventures over the past few years, from several trips to Peru to India, Nepal, Morroco, and many of my favorite places around California and the U.S. All photos were taken on Samsung Galaxy smartphones over the years.

Use the best tools

Being graphically challenged, I invested in ebook templates from Biz Template Babe, designed specifically for use on Canva (more on that later). The exact template kit I bought is this one called Ebook and Lead Magnet Bundle.

Sarah, the Biz Template Babe, does an outstanding job showing you exactly how to use the templates on Canva.

I’ve been using Canva, the online design tool for years, since it launched because it solved a huge problem for me…how to create great-looking graphic images to use on social media, without being a graphic designer. They have hundreds of templates for just about anything you would ever want to create.

If you’re not already using Canva, you can get started here with a free account.

To collect the content from Trailblazers, I created a form in Google docs, asking for name, tip and URL to include with the person’s tip. The spreadsheet that’s generated by Google forms makes it easy to collect and manage the content.

Once I had put together the tips with the images I had gathered and added a bio page and call to action at the end, I exported the document as a pdf. I was also able, in Canva, to export each page as an image to share on social media (I believe is a feature you get when you upgrade to a Pro account).

That’s it. There’s a learning curve to import and using templates, and once you’ve done it once or twice, it’s easy.

Share your lead magnet and invite others to help you

This is an important tip…when you have content from others, make it easy for them to share. In this case, I offered all the contributors a copy of the completed guide, images of their own, and other’s tips in two sizes (square and portrait), along with a set of hashtags they could use on social media. If you want people to help you promote, you must make it super easy for them to do so. They’ll appreciate it and you’ll get more participation in the promotion. 🥰

Once all the visual assets have been created, then I queued them up to drip out over a few weeks on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. I use Social Bee to schedule and drip evergreen content.

If you have more questions about how you can do this too, book a quick Ask Me Anything consult and I’ll be happy to help you and work out the steps with you.

I was taking a walk the other day, thinking about lead generation and how to express the concept and essential processes required to attract new leads for your business.

What came to mind is fishing. It’s not an original metaphor and I don’t even like fishing, but I do understand what it takes to catch a fish and it’s a pretty good way to illustrate lead generation.

When I was a kid, our family went camping a lot during the summer. Cheap vacations! And, living in California, there are lots of state and national parks that are perfect for family adventures.

One year we camped at Mineral King in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. We were with my grandparents, aunt and uncle and cousins. I have no recollection how old I was – maybe 7 or 8, but this was the year I learned how to fish. Paw, my grandfather loved to fish.

I was not crazy about fishing. And, when I caught a fish, I immediately threw it back in the water much to the dismay of my parents who were anticipating a fish dinner. I digress.

The thing about fishing, for a kid, is that it’s not that complicated. You need a fishing rod, bait, and a fishing hole to throw in your line. [If you are an avid fisherman/woman, please cut me some slack on oversimplifying the art of fishing. I was a kid. 😀 ]

Like fishing, lead generation requires a tool to “catch” the lead (a fishing rod), a call to action for an enticing offer (bait), and the perfect spot to place your call to action (a fishing hole).

OK, enough of the fishing metaphor. Let’s look at how to put together a lead generation system that will grow your prospect list for your business.

Before getting into the mechanics of your system, here’s how Hubspot defines “lead generation”:

Lead generation is the process of attracting and converting strangers and prospects into those leads…

and:

A lead is a person who has indicated interest in your company’s product or service in some way, shape, or form.

Your goal, then, is to attract a lead through the process of lead generation so you have an opportunity to educate them about why and how your service or product can help their business.

Begin with the end in mind

Stephen R. Covey had it right when he introduced his second habit in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

Begin with the end in mind.

Before you build your lead gen system, answer these questions:

What’s the outcome you want for your business?

Who do you want to work with?

What outcome do you want your client to get from your lead gen process?

That’s where it starts so you can create an effective lead gen system and offer that attracts the right people to your business.

Begin with the end in mind so you can create an effective lead generation offer.

 Click to Tweet

Creating any old offer a.k.a. a lead magnet doesn’t help if it doesn’t take your ideal client down the right path where the obvious next step is to raise their hand to say “I want to know more” or “I want to know how I can work with you.” Don’t waste your time. Not thinking it through at the outset is like throwing spaghetti and the wall to see what sticks.

Here’s an example of how I answer the questions for my primary source of new leads, the 7-Day Visibility Challenge.

1. I want new clients to sign up for my mastermind group, the Visibility Mastery Lab.

2. I want to work with solo or small business owners, authors or consultants with deep expertise in their niche, but limited knowledge of how to leverage the Web to get found by their audience.

They may be frustrated and want to know more, and really want to learn how to make it all work for their business. They absolutely do not want to be invisible even though they may be an introvert (like me!).

They’re curious and committed to trying and learning what it takes to attract the right people to their business, even if they don’t know exactly what to do right now.

They know that if they’re invisible and don’t step out into the virtual spotlight, then the struggle will continue. They’re ready, willing and able to do what it takes to connect with more of the right people because they KNOW they can transform lives with their expertise.

3. I want my lead (ideal client) to get a taste of one of the problems I can help them solve: how to get more leverage from their content in a few simple steps. By going through the on-demand steps and participating in the private support group on Facebook, they’ll get to experience me and my expertise and how that can help them build their business by getting more visibility.

The next logical step for the lead is to join a free live challenge where they’ll get more training and mentoring from me. Finally, when I offer the Visibility Mastery Lab, they’ll be in a position to make an informed choice about whether or not I’m the right person to invest with for their professional and business development.

Whew. Can you see how my system can lead a new prospect to make a well-informed decision about working with me?

I don’t toss out a free ebook on list-building, with no followup and then make a pitch for my mastermind group. You want to lead a prospect on a path that helps them get to know you better before you make an offer for your product. This post goes into a bit of detail about how I created the lead gen offer.

It’s your turn now. Copy these questions into a doc or write them on a piece of paper and fill in the blanks:

What’s the outcome you want for your business? The outcome I want is ________________

Who do you want to work with? I want to work with ___________________

What outcome do you want your prospective client to get from your lead gen process? I want my lead to experience ____________________

Now for the nuts and bolts of creating your lead gen system…

The Mechanics of Lead Generation

In addition to the exercise above, there are four primary parts to creating a lead gen system.

The offer that a visitor to your site asks for by giving you their email address.

There are so many options for what you can offer your website visitor. I found a great list via Hubspot that will give you a few ideas to get started.

20 Types of Lead Generation Content to Put Behind Your Landing Pages

The landing page describes your offer and why your ideal client should hand over their email address to get it.

Unless you’re a web designer, the simplest way to create a landing page is to use a ready-made template, designed by a pro. There’s a cost involved, and it will be less time-consuming and cheaper than you trying to design one yourself. There are dozens of landing page services like LeadPages, for example. Here’s a list of the best services via Crazy Egg:

7 Best Services For One-Click Landing Pages That Convert

The opt-in form on the landing page captures the lead’s name and email address and adds them to your list.

You’ll need an email service provider (ESP) for this bit. Every ESP I know of walks you through the steps to create a list in your database and a form to capture information. I recommend you ask for no more than name and email address. The fewer barriers you have, the more likely your visitor is to sign up for your offer.

CoSchedule, my favorite social media scheduling tool, has a good article on opt-in forms:

How To Create Opt-In Forms: 5 Ways To Convert Traffic Like Crazy

The call to action entices the visitor to click a button or link and takes them to the landing page.

There’s a lot of science that goes into crafting the “perfect” call to action. To get you started with some important tips, check out this article by Neil Patel:

How to Create The Perfect Call-to-Action

You now have expert advice on how to decide on your lead gen offer (begin with the end in mind) and sources for creating the system to collect leads (email addresses) and design your opt-in page and forms.

Circling back to my lead gen offer for the free 7-Day Visibility Challenge, here’s how it works:

1. A website visitor sees an invitation – call to action – to join the free challenge in a blog post or in the sidebar.

2. The visitor clicks on the call to action which redirects them to a landing page, built with LeadPages.

3. The visitor decides they want to join the Challenge and enters their name and email address in the form – created with InfusionSoft, my email service provider.

4. This triggers a thank you page and behind the scenes, the lead’s email address is added to the list for the free Challenge.

5. The Challenge emails are dripped to my new lead over 7 days with invitations to join the private Facebook group. Eventually, they’ll get an invitation to join a live challenge. And finally, they’ll get an offer to join the Visibility Mastery Lab.

This is a standard lead gen system. The flow is much the same for every lead gen offer you have. What differs are the tools you use. As you see in the recommended articles, there are many tools for creating lead gen pages. There are many tools for email service providers. Your offers can take many forms. Those are decisions only you can make based on your business and your resources.

What’s missing?

What’s not addressed in this article is traffic. How the heck do you get people over to your website so they see your lead gen offer?

That, my friend, falls into content promotion and I wrote specifically about how to promote lead gen offers in this post:

How To Promote Your New Lead Generation Offer

When your lead gen offer is integrated with your content, then it comes down to how you share and promote your blog posts over and over again. That process is addressed here.

Q&A

I asked members of my Adventures in Visibility community what questions they had about lead generation. A few recurring questions that came up are answered below.

1) What type of content and length do folks prefer?

This is an “it depends” question. You’ve got to know what your audience wants. I do find that the more specific the content is, the better. And, with short attention spans, shorter tends to be better. This article at DigitalMarketer.com has a really good list of tips for creating lead magnets.

2) I have several lead gen products. How often can I promote them on the different platforms?

Again, there’s no definitive answer and you’ll need to experiment with what your audience will tolerate. That being said, I recommend you rotate promotion of your offers so you’re promoting at least one of them a minimum of once a week. On Twitter, you can mix promotional tweets in between every fourth or fifth tweet.

Refer to my article above about how to promote your lead gen offer for ideas on how to mix up different types of promotions.

3) What could I do to improve conversions? That’s probably my biggest challenge.

Improving conversions has a lot of variables. First, you need to evaluate your success to date.

What are your current conversion percentages?

Are you getting enough traffic to the opt-in page?

Is your offer something your clients have indicated to you that they want?

What is your call to action? Could it be stronger?

Is the copy on your landing page compelling?

How is the offer delivered? Is it the type of content your audience wants?

Do you have testimonials explaining the benefits of your offer?

These are the starting points to assess where you can tweak and test your offer to achieve higher conversions.

4) What has been your most successful type of opt-in?

Over the years, what works best for my audience has changed. At the time of writing this post, my best lead gen offers are the 7-Day Visibility Challenge and my recent 5-Day Biz Story Challenge. Both of these offers deliver a lot of content with clear steps for taking action. I get new leads every day from these offers.

Over to you now. What type of lead generation offer works best for you?

Got questions about lead gen? Post them in the comments and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

P.S. After re-reading this article, I think catching a fish is a lot less complex than catching a lead for your business!

When is the last time you updated or created a new free lead generation offer (gift) for your website visitors? If you’re not getting many sign ups on your current offer, it could mean that it’s time for an upgrade.

First, to be clear about what a “lead” is, here’s a definition from HubSpot:

A lead is a person who has indicated interest in your company’s product or service in some way, shape, or form.

And lead generation:

Lead generation is the process of attracting and converting strangers and prospects into those leads…

It had been a few years since I had created a new lead gen offer and it was stale. I had put off developing something new because it takes time and energy. You need to know what your ideal client wants, create it and then deliver it. I can be lazy sometimes, but I finally took action.

Creating a New Lead Generation Offer

In a nutshell, below is what I did and what you can do too, to build your list – a community of people who want to get to know you better.

Capitalizing on my popular Online Visibility Challenge program, I crafted a free 7-day Visibility Challenge with the goal to give people a taste of what they could expect and learn during the paid 30-day Challenges. The on-demand email drip campaign launched recently and I’m pleased with the results to date. The real proof of success will be when I begin promoting my next paid Challenge!

1. Knowing that repurposing content is a big issue and challenge for people, I wrote a blog post about 13 ways to repurpose content. I included a content upgrade – a checklist – that required opting in to get.

2. Next, I did a short 4 question poll about repurposing content – where do people repurpose, challenges, what stops them, etc.

3. Then, I took the results and wrote two more blog posts addressing the top two challenges: not enough time and fear of getting duplicate content penalties.

4. From there I created 7-day Visibility Challenge, delivered via email, on demand, that guides people through five different ways to repurpose their content.

5. Even though it can be time-consuming to manage and moderate, I decided to set up a private Facebook group for the Challenge participants.

Currently, groups are one of the best ways of engaging with your peeps on Facebook since most never see the content you post on your business page. My goal and desire is to make sure that everyone who goes through the 7-Day Challenge gets the support to complete it and create a new habit for leveraging their content. Plus, I love getting to know everyone who is taking action and seeing results. It makes my heart sing! 🙂

Note: the opt-in and thank you pages were created with LeadPages and my email management system is Infusionsoft.

Once everything is set up – content reviewed and edited, the delivery system tested – then, it’s time to launch the new freebie (lead gen gift) to the world.

Initial Promotion Tactics

1. For those who are on my email list, I invited them to get the new content. It’s not just for new people. The first surprise was how many people reengaged with me. Clients and students I hadn’t heard from in awhile joined both the Challenge and the Facebook group. They’re also sharing it with their own followers. The Facebook group is working really well for getting back into conversations with people I had not connected with in awhile.

2. I shared the Challenge all over my social networks and new people on are signing up. At the moment, it’s about 30% new subscribers vs. the rest are people who’ve been on my list for years.

3. The content in the free Challenge has invitations throughout to sign up to get my blog posts (that list is growing too), join my live video show, and get on the Early Bird list for the paid challenges. As people get to know me, they are more willing to opt-in to get more information from me. That’s a good sign.

4. So far 27% of those who signed up have jumped into the FB group where they are encouraged to post links to the content they’re repurposing as part of the Challenge. I’m contemplating ways to get a higher join rate because a lot of magic happens in the group. In particular, I and other participants are inclined to share each others’ posts which also helps to boost visibility!

Now you know how to kick-start the optins with your current email list.

Long Term Promotion Tactics

Once you create and launch your lead generation gift, you’ve got to promote it. Don’t fall into the “set it and forget it” mentality.

Not only do you have to announce it to the world, you have to keep reminding followers in your social networks why and how they can benefit from getting your gift. To prepare for ongoing promotion, implement the steps below.

First, create images for each social network you use: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and your blog. Canva is my graphic tool of choice so I can use their templates and easily resize images for each social network.

Facebook: new cover image for your page

Facebook: If you create a tab for your opt-in, then you’ll need an image for that as well

Facebook: for ads [remember you cannot have more than 20% text on images for ads – test your images here]

Facebook: for posts you may want to boost to your followers

Twitter: new cover image

Twitter: for tweets

Pinterest: for tips and promo image

Instagram: for tips and a promo image

Blog: for your sidebar

Blog: to add to the footer of your blog posts

Google+: for posts you can use the image you create for tweets

Google+: new cover image

LinkedIn: for status updates you can use the tweet image

I created many different sizes and shapes of images to promote the 7-Day Visibility Challenge.

Once you’ve created the images you want to use in your promotions, then move on to your social profiles:

Update the About section on your Facebook Page, Twitter Profile and other profiles to include the URL to your new gift

Post an image on Twitter and pin the tweet to your profile (more visibility for the tweet!)

Queue a series of tweets to publish at various intervals for a week or so. Make sure you hit the time zones of your followers.

Post an image with a link on the sidebar of your blogsite (you can see my example in the sidebar on the right)

If you use a popup on your site, update it for your new gift. I’m experimenting with an exit popup (opens when someone leaves my site). It’s too soon for me to know how well this works. You’ll see it when you leave this blog post!

On Instagram, post your promo image and update the URL in your profile so it takes curious viewers straight to your optin page

Follow up on Instagram with tip images from your gift and a call to action to click the link in your bio

You probably get the point I’m making. Wherever you’re active on social media, share that you have a new free gift. Once and done is not enough. Repeat with new images and new tips for several weeks to ensure your followers see your offer.

Finally, remember to send follow-up emails with an invitation to those on your list who did not open the initial email. That will usually increase your optins.

I know it’s a big challenge for my Online Visibility Challenge participants as well as many, many others doing business on the Web. When I started my web-based business in 1996 (yes, that’s 20 years ago!), the challenge wasn’t attracting people to visit your website or sign up for your email newsletter. The challenge was that hardly anyone was using the web for business. Most people didn’t have an email address!

That means those who were publishing an email newsletter a.k.a. ezine didn’t have any trouble building their email lists. Remember, there were no social media networks competing for attention so our primary goal was to attract subscribers to our email newsletter. And, all you had to do was put a form on your website and say something like Subscribe to my Free Newsletter. And, people would because it was a novelty.

The novelty wore off pretty rapidly. Now, twenty years later, figuring out what your audience wants from you so they will opt-in to your list, takes more thought, relationship-building and research.

If you’re wondering why no one is opting in to get your blog updates or subscribe to your e-newsletter or get your free e-course, then it’s time to do some research.

You’ve got to know what your audience wants from you. It’s not about what you want to give them. Important distinction there.

Create a poll

It’s simple. There are so many ways you can gather intel from your subscribers and social media followers. But, you need to ask.

One of the easiest ways is to create a series of one-question polls.

Both Twitter and Google+ (classic) allow you to create and post polls. You can also use a tool like PollDaddy. All three can be embedded on your blogsite so you can get a range of responses.

Twitter polls are live for 23 hours.
See: Motivational Quotes – Love Them or Hate Them? [Poll]

Google+ polls are open indefinitely. Go ahead and vote on the poll below. You don’t have to leave the blog!

Only by asking and listening to the responses you get, will you know want kind of content to create for your free gifts to build your audience, blog posts to attract visitors, and status updates to get more engagement.

Ask one question

One question polls require you to ask a clear question and provide a choice of responses. While you’ll get deeper and more concrete info from a multi-question survey, you can still learn a lot from polls. By asking just one question, you reduce most of the barriers people have about taking the time to respond. By offering choices, you reduce the barriers even more.

You can also simply ask one open-ended question, like Chris Ducker in the tweet below.

If there was ONE blog post that I could write for you, what would it be and why?! https://t.co/Hahy5jdI2i pic.twitter.com/tnWBww7zkN

— Chris Ducker (@ChrisDucker) January 7, 2016

What kind of questions should you ask?

It depends. 😉

It depends on the nature of your business and what you want to know. Sometimes you may hear crickets when you ask. If that happens, try again. It’s all about experimentation to find what hits for your peeps.

Some examples for poll questions are:

How often do you use [tool, service, social network]?

What’s your favorite [tool, service, social platform]?

Do you use [social network, service, tool]?

How many blog posts do you write per week?

Do you like X?

How much time do you spend on X?

What type of business are you in?

The key thing is to ask questions that give you information you can use to hone in on how you can connect better with your audience and give them more of what they want.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it…

Create a poll about something you want to know from your audience.

Share the poll on your blog and social networks

Post it on my Facebook page so I can take the poll and share it.

Use the hashtag #PollChallenge so I can easily find your poll.

Got questions about attracting your audience? Ask me in the comments.
