Social media feels unstable right now. Reach shifts. Formats change. What worked six months ago can fall flat today.

For solo business owners, the pressure isn’t just about keeping up. It’s about deciding where your limited time should go without reopening that decision every week.

When every platform stays in play, attention scatters. Effort resets. Nothing has time to build.

The core insight

The real problem isn’t choosing the wrong platform. It’s trying to stay active everywhere instead of committing to the places that match your audience and how you work.

Focus creates traction. Spread creates drag.

Why this keeps showing up

Most advice pushes volume. Post more. Show up everywhere. Repurpose endlessly.

That sounds smart, but it ignores reality. Solo businesses don’t fail from lack of ideas. They stall because too many options stay open at once.

Algorithms change. New formats appear. So decisions get revisited instead of settled.

What changes when this is addressed

When you narrow your focus, things start to calm down.

Content planning gets easier. Patterns become visible. Effort compounds instead of restarting.

You stop guessing and start noticing what’s working.

Who this is for

This perspective is especially helpful if:

You’re active on several platforms but none feel settled

You keep second-guessing where to post

You want clearer ROI from your social time

You’re open to using AI to support decisions, not replace them

If your marketing feels unsettled, it’s rarely because you’re inactive. More often, it’s because too much is still open at the same time.

I see this with solo business owners who are showing up, posting, experimenting, and staying informed. On paper, things look fine. But internally, nothing feels finished.

That tension usually shows up as channel confusion.

The real issue isn’t picking the wrong platform

Channel confusion isn’t about not knowing where to show up. It’s about keeping too many options mentally active at once.

When every platform stays a “maybe,” none of them get full attention. Decisions don’t settle. Progress feels temporary. Even consistency doesn’t bring relief.

In the original article, I compare this to working with too many browser tabs open. You may only be using one or two, but everything else stays loaded in the background.

Why this pattern keeps repeating

This behavior is often rewarded.

There’s always a new platform, a new format, or a new success story that makes it feel smart to keep options open. Flexibility can look responsible.

Over time, though, that flexibility turns into friction. Decisions are revisited instead of resolved. Effort spreads out instead of settling.

What changes when consolidation happens

Consolidation isn’t about choosing the best channel forever. It’s about choosing one place to focus long enough for effort to land and compound.

When a decision has a clear container, mental load drops. Second-guessing fades. The work starts to feel finished instead of provisional.

That’s when visibility builds instead of restarting.

Who this perspective is for

This way of looking at channel choice is especially helpful if:

You’re active in multiple places but none feel fully locked in

You keep reopening decisions you thought you’d made

Your marketing feels heavier than it should

TL;DR

If your social profiles still say what you did two years ago, you’re probably missing out on new clients.

I’ve helped business owners fix this fast. In this article, I show you how to update your profiles so they reflect what you offer now and make it easier for people to connect with you. You’ll get a checklist, a smart way to use AI, and a few examples that can save you time. This is one of the simplest ways to boost your visibility without creating anything new.

You already know the importance of attracting clients, right?

But here’s a question:

When was the last time you updated your social media profiles?

If you can’t remember or it’s been a while, you’re missing an easy win for improving your visibility and attracting more clients.

It’s easy to set it and forget it. Believe me, I’m guilty of doing that.

Then, one day, I take a minute to see what it says and realize it’s out of date, could tell a better story, isn’t focused on the clients I want to attract, or the links need to be updated…

Your business evolves. You evolve.

You get the picture.

So, while this isn’t a ninja visibility hack, it’s a reminder:

Take a few minutes one day this week to look at all your social media profiles. Make tweaks and updates to reflect best who you are, what you do, and who you serve now.

When someone hears about you for the first time, they often head straight to your social media profiles. Whether it’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Substack, TikTok, or another platform, this is your chance to make a great first impression.

A stale or outdated profile can be a turn-off for potential clients.

Conversely, a well-crafted, current profile shows professionalism, expertise, and confidence.

You want potential clients to see exactly what you offer, how you can help them, and why they should stick around. An outdated profile can confuse or turn people away, while a current, relevant one gives people a reason to click “follow” or “connect.”

Take Action: Update Your Social Media Profiles

Updating your profiles can seem like a chore, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. For each social platform you and your ideal clients spends time, review the following and make changes as necessary;

Profile Picture: Use a recent, high-quality photo that reflects your personality or brand. People connect with faces, not logos (unless you’re a bigger brand).

Bio or Headline: Make this short but punchy. Clearly state what you do and who you help. Be specific! For example, “I help solopreneurs increase online visibility with actionable AI strategies” sounds much more appealing than “Marketing Expert.”

Links: Make sure your website, lead magnets, or any other call-to-action links are working and visible. Don’t let clients get lost in the internet maze trying to find you.

About Section: Refresh this section to include the latest results you’ve achieved for clients, any new services you offer, or any qualifications you’ve gained. Be authentic and focus on how you solve your clients’ problems.

Pin Important Posts: Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (X) let you pin a post to the top of your profile. Use this space to highlight your latest offer, free guide, or upcoming event to drive more visibility to your core content.

Cover image: Update the “hero” or cover image to reflect your current brand or offers.

Experiment with AI to Help You Craft Better Profiles

You don’t have to do all the work yourself. Let AI help you craft the perfect bio or update the wording on your profile. Here’s a prompt you can use to make it easier:

AI Prompt: Write a concise, professional bio that showcases my expertise in [your field], highlights the specific value I offer to [your target audience], and ends with a clear call to action. Keep the tone engaging but straightforward.

This AI prompt can help you brainstorm ideas or tweak the wording to sound more polished and aligned with your brand voice. You can also adjust it for your different profiles.

Another option is to include the URL for your website’s About Page and have your AI tool draft multiple bios for you to review.

Tip » I suggest creating a document you keep on file with multiple versions of your bio in various word counts, which you can easily copy and paste on your social media accounts.

You can use them when invited to be a podcast guest or guest blogger.

I have had a running list of bio versions for years. As my business evolves, I update both long—and short-form bios to have on hand when I need them.

What Else Should You Know?

When updating your profiles, remember to stay consistent across platforms. You want clients to recognize your brand no matter where they find you.

Also, make a habit of checking in on your profiles every couple of months. It’s not a one-and-done task. Your business evolves, and so should your profiles.

And don’t forget: engaging regularly on your updated profiles is just as important as keeping them up to date. Post updates, share client successes, and interact with your audience. This keeps your profile active and boosts your chances of showing up in searches.

A simple update to your social media profiles can be a positive shift for attracting more clients. It’s easy to overlook, but once you make those updates, you’ll see how a little effort here can go a long way in improving your online visibility.

Your turn: What’s the one thing you will update on your profile today? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear what changes you’re making. Also, post a link to your profile on the social network of your choice so I can learn about what you’re up to!

Over the years I’ve had conversations around the same question many times. With friends and clients, on a hangout with Jason Wiser, and in the Challenges, I host … how do I start building my platform, a.k.a. audience?

Platform, audience, tribe, community, followers… without them, it’s nearly impossible to stand out and get your message heard. Committing the time and effort to building your platform increases your visibility…guaranteed.

Visibility = Opportunity

Or as Michael Hyatt, author of Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, says:

You may have specific outcomes in mind for your work, and I urge you to be open to opportunities you never dreamed of that can also occur as a result to having more visibility.

Where Do You Start?

Let’s assume you’ve done the pre-work and figured out the big picture of what you want to accomplish with your business (or book, app, film, product, service, cause). You’re clear on your core message. You’ve done your research and know the demographics of the audience you want find and connect with, and your goal is to build a platform so when the time is right, you have an audience of loyal fans who want what you’re offering… your book, app, film, product, service, cause, etc.

Before you start running around searching for your fans, you need to put your foundation in place. You may have much of this done already. If so, then make sure each element is up to date and optimized to tell your story and convert prospects to leads to buyers.

If you don’t have your foundation in place, start here (click through to access live links in the image below).

As you can see from what’s necessary to have in place, there are many steps to getting ready to receive your fans. I don’t mean to gloss over the work required, but for the purposes of this article, I’m focusing on the external parts of your platform that need to be built vs. foundational pieces you must have in place if you’re doing any type of business on the Web.

Pick Your Social Networks

Your foundation – home base – is ready for visitors. Now, it’s time to get in front of the people you want to attract. Rather than diluting your efforts, pick a maximum of two social networks to focus your time and energy, at least in the beginning. Realistically, your audience is concentrated on just a few of the networks anyway, especially if your “thing” is focused on a specific niche.

For an example of how I might guide a client at this point, let’s take a look at my friend who is a filmmaker. While he’s made films in a couple of genres, his passion is science fiction.

Read: Top Ways to Use Social Media Marketing for Your Business

To find people who love sci-fi, he’ll head over to Facebook, first and search for groups and pages with lots of sci-fi fans. Let’s start with a wide search on the term “science fiction” to see what comes up. Then we can drill down.

What comes up is a page with over 2,000,000 Likes, so we know there’s an audience on Facebook!

As you scroll down the page, you see a list of your friends who like sci-fi as well as a list of related Pages and Groups. That’s where you’ll want to dig in.

Depending on my friend’s sci-fi niche, I’d advise him to check out some of the Pages and Like them. For example, if he wants to start connecting with the 1.2 million fans of the Syfy page, then he would also like the page and make sure he’s getting notifications about new posts.

The tactic then would be to Like and comment on posts, and to share content to his own profile or page. Why? Because he wants to establish himself as knowledgeable about science fiction TV, movies and probably literature as well. By sharing those interests and sources of great sci-fi content, my friend’s followers will begin to see his as the go-to guy for all things sci-fi.

My recommendation is to find 4-5 Pages with big followings and start paying attention and engaging on those pages. The more active you are, the more visibility you’ll be building.

In the meantime, in addition to curating content from other sources, he’ll be posting his own content on his own page. And, this is where many people get overwhelmed…what to post???

What to Post on Your Facebook Page

Be mindful of only posting content about your own thing. Naturally, you want people to know about your (thing) and you need to remind them of its existence from time to time, but not all the time.

What’s a filmmaker to do? Let’s brainstorm a bit about topics he could post about to build rapport and engagement with his fans…

Ask questions

what’s your favorite sci-fi film (book, TV show, author, filmmaker)

who’s your favorite character?

which feature film do you want to see win the Best Picture Oscar?

if you could make a sci-fi movie, what would it be about?

Post quotes from well-known, or obscure, movies. Ask your fans to guess.

Mention your film from time to time

What are you working on right now?

When do you anticipate its release?

What are the struggles you face getting it made?

Who stars in the film?

Why are you making the film?

You can’t stop there, though. Don’t drop a post and then disappear. Social is about building relationships with your audience. Make sure you respond and interact with the people who comment. When a fan asks or answers a question, acknowledge it.

Schedule 30 minutes a day to post and engage. It’s not much to ask if you expect people to make a financial commitment to your (film, book, product, etc.). Your fans and followers are looking for connection and acknowledgment. They want to be seen and heard, as much as you want them to see and hear your message.

And that’s where you can start with Facebook. What’s next?

Where else do sci-fi fans hang out? I’d check for communities on Google+, next, and repeat the Facebook tactics to start finding and engaging with folks.

Finally, I’d suggest doing a few hashtag/keyword searches on Twitter to see what kind of conversations people are having on the topic. Start following people who are actively talking about sci-fi and again, comment and retweet their content.

The steps above create the first stages of your platform. I understand it can feel overwhelming. I get it. There are a lot of things you can do to create more visibility. However, if you start with small steps as outlined above, work them consistently for a few months to see what kind of response you get, it doesn’t have to take a lot of time.

Schedule 30 minutes a day. That’s all. If you work five days a week on your visibility plan, that’s a mere two and half hours a week to build your audience. Start small and work up to more time and/or layering on more social sites.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize

I know you are passionate about your art and business. It is your gift to the world and there are people who want what it is you create. They yearn for your message.

Start small and focus on building layer by layer. There will be time down the road for you to add other forms of rich media to your visibility plan. You don’t need to do it all at once.

Pick two social sites to start building your fanbase.

Find pages, groups, communities and people to connect within your niche on those sites.

Decide what type of content you enjoy creating the most (text, video, audio, images). Pick 1-2 forms of content to focus your energy on that don’t drain you. Keep it simple.

Post and engage 30 minutes a day.

Sharing your message and art with the world often becomes your life’s work. Giving up is not an option. Take it one step at a time and you’ll get there.

Commit to doing these steps for 90 days and let me know what happens, OK? If you’re feeling bold, declare your intention to a 90-day commitment in the comments!
