The email was a reminder of essential business tasks every content entrepreneur, blogger and solo professional should review and take action on at the beginning of the year. 

One in particular popped out at me since it’s something that crosses my mind every time I see – or don’t see – this on a blog…

Creating a universal avatar can be the difference between being anonymous and being known and recognized. Using an avatar gives you visibility and recognition when you are posting and commenting online. Keep in mind people want to see people and your headshot helps create relatability.

Dan mentioned Gravatar, a free tool created by Automattic, and is integrated on millions of sites worldwide.

Now, if you don’t want people to know who you are and recognize you around the Web, that’s OK. I get it. I have friends who feel that way (they are not business owners, though).

However, if you’re building a personal brand, you’re an author, a coach, consultant, influencer, etc., then I recommend you use an avatar so you have better visibility and are recognized by your intended audience.

And, the easiest way to create one is with Gravatar.

1. First, set up a free account on Gravatar.
2. Then, upload an image – your headshot (remember: headshot = relatability).
3. Next, add the email address you use when you comment on blog posts.
4. Your email address will be verified and then your Gravatar will be live.

The next time you comment on a blog post that has Avatars enabled, your image will be associated with the comment.
